ABOUT THE PROGRAMME LEADER

 

Dr. Mike HALKHOREE
Programme Leader Health Sciences and Nursing

Dr Mike is the Programme Leader for Nursing and Health Science of Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd. He has already captured 50 years of experience in Nursing. After completing his training in both General and Mental Health Nursing and specialising in critical care nursing and cardiology, he moved from the clinical practice into the teaching aspect of nursing in London. He has also gained experience in the field of addiction. He was the Director of Nursing in Saudi Arabia. He has international learning experience and exposure to more advanced nursing practices.
He was the Senior Nurse Educator at Apollo Bramwell Nursing School and Head of the Health-Science Department at Rushmore whereby he had a direct hand in introducing a bachelor programme in Nursing for registered nurses in Mauritius.

Dr Mike is a PhD holder in Nursing from Leeds Beckett University. He has a Bachelor and Master’s degree in Education.

Mr. Suren REESAUL

Mr. Suren REESAUL

Lecturer in Health Sciences and Nursing

Suren is the Lecturer at Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd. He coordinates the BA Nursing course with La Trobe University, Australia. He has 10 years of experience in teaching and supervising at tertiary level (University of Mauritius, University of Technology and Open University). He is a Part time lecturer for adult nursing at Rushmore Business School in partnership with Leeds Beckett University. He has also taught at the Central School of Nursing. He has worked for National Aids Unit, National Aids Secretariat, Global Fund, National Drug Observatory, Clinical Research Regulatory Council and Health Development Secretariat. He has extensive clinical nursing experience in the fields of surgery, orthopaedics, burns, oncology, medicine, cardiac and community health.

Suren holds an MBA (First Division), MSc (AHRP shield), MELM (First Class), PGD Hospital Management - cum laude TAL 5050 - A+, a BSc, Hons Nursing (First Class). He has participated in various national research studies – NCD, IBBS and RDS.

Mr. Chottoo AUBDOOL

Mr. Chottoo AUBDOOL

Lecturer in Health Sciences and Nursing

Mr. Aubdool has 10 years of experience as lecturer, teaching Health and Social Care courses at Waltham Forest College of Further Education, London, and University of Westminster. He was a trained nurse at London University College Hospital. He was a Clinical and Teaching Charge Nurse at Newham University College hospital in the Acute Medical and Elderly wards. He worked at UCLH bone marrow transplant unit.

He worked as a senior nurse educator for the Diploma in General Nursing at Apollo Bramwell Nursing School and coached students for Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare.

He holds a BA (Hons) and an MA with Merit. He is registered with the Nursing Council of Mauritius. Short courses followed in Gerontology, Communication and Counseling Skills, Bone Marrow Transplant, Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice and Certificate in Further Education Teaching UK.

Mr. Shivanand MAKHUN

Mr. Shivanand MAKHUN

Lecturer in Health Sciences and Nursing

Shivanand is Lecturer in Nursing of Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd. He has over 20 years of professional experience in the field of nursing in both public and private sectors in Mauritius. He has eight years of experience in training and education of nurses, accreditation, management and delivery of programmes. He is presently an elected member of the Nursing Council of Mauritius.

He holds an MBA in HRM, MSc in Health Services Management and Degree in Nursing

Mr.  Owen PRAYAG

Mr. Owen PRAYAG

Lecturer in Health Sciences and Nursing

Mr. Owen Prayag reckons more than 43 years of experience in the nursing world. He has an MBA in Leadership & Sustainability, MSc in Health Services Management, BSc Nursing, Diploma in Hospital Management, Diploma in Personnel Management in Health Services Organizations. He had a rich career both locally and internationally. His specialization was in Critical Care Services and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Cardio-Thoracic Unit, and Management.

He was successively ICU Staff Nurse, Head Nurse, Unit Manager, and Head of the Nursing Education Department in A Regional Hospital in Saudi Arabia. Upon his return to Mauritius, he joined the private sector and started the setting of ICU, Cath Lab, and Cardio-Thoracic Unit in the private health care sector in Mauritius. He has been a Nursing Administrator and Head of Training Department in a large private clinic. He retired from clinical practice in December 2018, and joined PolyTechnics Mauritius Limited in April 2019 and continues to share his wide experience.

Mr. Ravindranath DEENOO

Mr. Ravindranath DEENOO

Lecturer in Health Sciences and Nursing

Ravi is in his second year at Polytechnics Mauritius, working as a Nursing Lecturer. He is qualified as a general nurse in Mauritius and cumulates more than 30 years of nursing experience in Mauritius and the United Kingdom. He believes that providing an excellent education to learners will transform them to embark on a career and serve society well.
He is registered with the Nursing Council of Mauritius and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the United Kingdom as a District Nurse and Nurse Teacher. He obtained an honours degree as a Specialist Practitioner in District Nursing and a post-graduate certificate in teaching at the London South Bank University in the UK. He worked as a District Nurse Team Leader at the Central London Community Healthcare Trust, UK, where he managed a team of nurses and supported students in their clinical placement.
Mr. Deenoo delivers his teaching with passion and thrives on making his students successful.

Mrs. Heema RAMSAROOP

Mrs. Heema RAMSAROOP

Associate Lecturer in Health Sciences and Nursing

Heema is the Associate Lecturer, in the Health and Science department at Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd (PML). She has 10 years of nursing including 3 years studentship in hospital settings at the Wellkin Hospital. There, she gained ample experiences in clinical settings and practices, in the Medical and Surgical field. She was also a clinical mentor and a team leader.

She is the youngest, first and only female teaching staff in the Nursing department at PML, where a diversity of teaching methods are used to form more competent and caring nurses.

She is a holder of BSc (Hons) in Adult Nursing at a Rushmore University, awarded by Leeds Beckette University, a Diploma in General Nursing from Apollo Bramwell Nursing School, awarded by University of Mauritius. She is a Registered Nurse with the Nursing Council of Mauritius and a Nursing Trainer registered by MQA.

Dr. Hanish BHURTUN

Dr. Hanish BHURTUN

Associate Lecturer in Health Sciences and Nursing

Dr BHURTUN is a Post-doctoral fellow in Health Science and has a PhD is Nursing Science. After completing his Bachelor’s in Nursing, he continued his Masters’ studies and specialized in Gerontology and Public Health. His doctoral thesis focused on the improvement of clinical nursing education. Dr. BHURTUN has a Pedagogical Diploma in Higher Education, a Certificate in Pedagogy focusing on online pedagogical techniques.

Dr. BHURTUN has several years of experience as a nurse and charge nurse in Finland. He has worked as a lecturer, academic manager and international project assistant in Nordic countries.

As a researcher, Dr. BHURTUN contributed towards the development of clinical nursing by developing an international instrument that can measure nursing students’ levels of stress and coping mechanisms accurately, and has successfully published a new stress and coping framework in this field. He published several articles in journals, contributed in book chapters, and disseminated information through conferences.
