Our approach to training is about involving industry throughout the educational lifecycle at Polytechnics. From the start, industry participates in stakeholder meetings to help us identify, customize and deliver the programmes right. Shortly after, we invite HR experts to speed-interview our students and give them a true and accurate picture of the demands and expectations of employers. Students join employers in internships, traineeships or shadowing assignments to learn, share and imbibe skills that will make them more competent and attractive. Employers set aside real projects for students so that they get exposed to the real work from Day One.

We also mount innovative research projects with employers that involve staff, students and employees to collaborate and refine ideas, execute on proof of concepts, build prototypes or perform simulation exercises on new products and services. Often times, collaborative projects launched by international organisations and/or Government would require employers to apply in tandem with educational institutions such as Polytechnics Mauritius.

Work-Based Learning

Evidenced from the “Practice-based immersion” of the 4Ps of Polytechnics Mauritius learning methodology, we encourage industry partners from the private and public sectors to collaborate with us on internships, mentoring, career counselling, higher-order apprenticeship and shadowing assignments. Work-based learning provides an ideal way to test drive a career.

WBL is your chance to discover things you cannot learn in a classroom. Get inside information about the career you’re interested in, or simply get a taste of what’s it is really like on the job. At Polytechnics Mauritius, we are such strong believers of WBL that we embrace it at the core of our learning DNA. After all, aiming for a high skills ecosystem can only come from experimentation and practice.

Benefits of Work-Based Learning

To Students: WBL helps students put their knowledge to practice and acquire work experience while studying in a stress-free atmosphere. The projects and assignments become part of the Portfolio @ PML and the exposure ensures that students develop realistic expectations of the world of work, its rigors and ‘highs and lows’. At the final interview for the dream job, they will then be able to dazzle and impress.

To Employers: WBL enables employers to reduce their recruitment and training costs. It allows a significant portion of the grunt work to be done at an efficient rate by interns. It also acts as a filter of “test before you commit”. Building a pipeline of talent and future employees is important for every employer, not least because natural forces of the ‘market’ set in and recruiting is not the same as retaining and retaining is not the same as phasing out. WBL equally enables employers to set in the right expectations for students

To us: WBL improves student motivation, attendance and graduation rates. Students who face the rigor of the world of work early develop an inherent maturity to understand that the journey through a career is a difficult one and proving oneself early is important. The fact that students who build and showcase their skills and competencies to their employer may land a job before graduation is yet another compelling fact and significantly improves the likelihood of students completing their education and training at PML. Above all, it improves PML’s relationship with the community.

Shadowing assignments

We are constantly on the lookout for industry partners that wish to give opportunities to youngsters and take them up on shadowing assignments to “observe, analyze and synthesize” the day to day of company executives. Shadowing gives them an opportunity to “walk” along with executives and get a glimpse firsthand of meetings, decision making, project management, mentoring and coaching.

Capstone Projects

Project 1 – Automated Smart Parking with integrated payment solution based on IoT technologies.


Description: The system will provide a mobile application for booking a spot, generating a QR code and catering a backend process to calculate the number of hours parked and an automatic money deduction from a registered bank account.

Techs: Flutter, Dart, Android Studio, Node-MCU, PHP, MySQL, AWS Services & C++

Project 2 – An AI-powered cuisine for smart consumption with enhanced nutrition.


Description: A multiform technology to transform traditional kitchens smart. It uses an AI engine for object detection in a black box for keeping record of storage of food items in inventory. It also consists of a mobile app which can take out a grocery list whenever required, check inventory, suggest recipe based on available ingredients, list out missing ingredients for a recipe. Suggest healthy food recipes and tips as per the user preferences.

Techs: WordPress, PHP, HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, AJAX, Java, Android Studio, Pi, Single-Shot multibox Detection (SSD) network intended to perform object detection, TensorFlow, Keras & CNN

Project 3 – IoT Greenhouse Environmental Conditions Monitoring using IoT technologies.


Description: A system to allow individuals to engage in subsistence agriculture while being able to monitor their produce using modern technologies.

Techs:  Node-MCU, Node-RED, MQTT, Sensors & Actuators, PHP, & MySQL

Project 4 – Sign language translator


Description: The project is about a sign language translator whereby the program will translate the sign language into text and speech..

Project 5 – HealthCare Monitoring System


Description: The idea of the project is to implement a smart watch which will capture patient basic health signs (temperature, blood pressure, and pulse rate) and send it to an application which we will be developing. The application will generate graphs of patients upon request made by a nurse or doctor.

We will also be working on a dashboard where it will display some details of Hospital/Clinics, that is how many beds are available and in which department, the bed occupancy rate, current patient and so on.

Project 6 – Student Management System


Description: The aim of SMS is to develop an information management application in school and university with a centralized database that can be reached by multiple users.

The system can store the details of students, faculty, teachers, attendance, assessment scores, overall performance and dynamically maintains their details. The proposed system provides the easiest way to manage all aspects of student and university.

Project 7 – Security information and event management system (SIEM)


Description: The idea is to build SIEM with a Threat Intelligence feature that, upon the arising of an attack, the system will query whether this attack is known with open-source resources. Nowadays, cyber-attacks are revolving and becoming more and more harmful. Some are even using Artificial Intelligence to carry out these attacks. Thus, using this system we can have data aggregation and our assets’ visibility using security information and an event management system. Moreover, it will provide an incident detection factor that can be converted as an alert if ever an attack is detected.

Project 8 – Nursing Case Study


Description: This is part of continuous assessment strategies during the second and third year. The students are required to submit a Nursing case study each on the following aspects of their clinical placement.

  • Medical Nursing
  • Surgical Nursing

It is an account of the actual nursing care given to a particular patient, the students have cared for during their second and third year clinical placement. A guideline is provided indicating the format of the nursing case studies.

Internship Based Projects

Project-Based Internship by Diploma Year 2 Students


During the Covid-19 pandemic due to the sanitary restrictions put forward by the authority, hotels could not welcome the students of PML. A new strategy on having the students follow their internship program was implemented with an MOA between Polytechnic Mauritius and the Industry partner for the good learning process of students. The students brought qualified knowledge into play and get to try out their theoretical and methodological competencies in practice. The project-based internships gave the Industry partner the opportunity to meet students and introduce them to the company with a view to possible later employment. It requires an investment from both parties – in time, commitment, planning, and matching expectations.

Project 1 – Bus Booking System

Bus Booking System

Description: The purpose of this project is to build an application using Visual studio code and PHP to design a transport booking system for PML. Using this system, the students will be able to book a shuttle for the different campuses and also to check the availability of seats.

Project 2 – Online Food Ordering & Delivery

Online Food Ordering & Delivery

Description: This project is a web-based application that will be created to facilitate people to order food online in a simple and easy way without the need to move to purchase food at an eatery.  Customers will save time since the food is delivered to their location thus allowing them concentrate on their jobs. The system will also ensure that the delivery of the food to be done in a timely manner.

Project 3 – PolyTrans


Description: Poly Transport: A mobile app for students & staff to request transport to attend Reduit Campus from Reduit bus stand. We are trying to work out a solution to allow anonymous login to allow the public (non-student & non-staff) to use the app too – helpful during open days or when someone is coming to submit an application.

Techs: Flutter, Dart, Firebase, Adobe XD (for UI UX Design)

Project 5 – PolyPark


Description: A web application that will solve parking problems faced in Mauritius, which will contain details about the parking area, for example; the total number of parking spots, whether parking is available and how many parking are free during specific periods. Users will also be able to know whether a parking is already booked by someone or when will that spot be free.

Project 6 – Doctor Appointment System

Doctor Appointment System

Description: With a doctor appointment system, Patient can book appointment with doctors at anytime and anywhere as it will be available on the internet from the comfort of their homes using their device. Doctors will be able to view all their patient records logged in a database and can identify progress and trend analysis related to patient health.

Project 7 – Soerenberg Project


Description: Level one consists of proposing a restaurant concept, including its name, logo, design, menu and website.

Level two consists of proposing a resort concept including its name, logo, design, departments, menu and website.

Objectives of the Soerenberg Project:

An interesting and exciting medium through which students will combine learning from a number of disciplines and develop them in a creative and fun way. This allows students to see the close inter-relationships that exist between the subjects in their course and enable them to work in teams.

Industry Advisory Committee

The Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) is a collaboration with staff at Polytechnics and industry experts that offer professional advice on strategic objectives and initiatives from an industry perspective, emphasis on industry outreach efforts, provide in-market expertise on key areas and foster professional dialogue between Polytechnics Mauritius, Government agencies and employers.  

During “Industry Showcase” or Assessment of group or individual portfolios, the IAC is instrumental in assembling a panel of experts that critique and speak of the relevance and pertinence of the assessment in light of latest industry trends or work practices. Studies at Polytechnics draw heavily from industry. There is not much utility value in presenting theoretical work that may fall short or be inadequate out there in the world of work. The IAC concurrently delegates some of its powers to Advisory Committees across niche fields where expertise may be very hard to come by. Examples include the Marine Advisory Committee at Polytechnics. From a governance standpoint, the IAC falls under the purview of the Academic Council of Polytechnics.




At Polytechnics, all academics interviewing with us, go through a case interview and a presentation at the interview. We are keen to see our prospective academics in action not solely rely on their experience on paper. Academics with great CVs can also reveal ill-fits in class, especially in a Polytechnics approach education. Some academics comes from a lecturing background and some come directly from industry. Many of our academics are employed on short term contract as adjunct faculty since they work full time in industry. Having them intervene in class gives students a direct perspective of the here-and-now in industry.

Time and again, we like to have our academics go back into industry immersion in the form of shadow assignments or to work in a specific department to brush up on latest knowledge and employer practices. This gives them an edge in skilling students for the current and future world of work.

pic 2During my externship with Le Sakoa Boutik Hotel, a four plus star hotel situated in Trou aux Biches, composed of a complex of thatched buildings, I was able to develop and expand my communication skills in relation to the team working under pressure. I particularly discovered how actually direct interactions between a service provider and its customers could be very useful in improving customer care skills. Some tasks were indeed quite challenging but this proved to be valuable in deepening my confidence and refining proactive skills. The externship was an intensive experience replete with multiple opportunities involving a lot of observation and learning in four different departments namely, Human Resources, Front Office, Food & Beverage and Spa & Wellness. Moreover, in terms of competencies, I am now better equipped to tie curriculum to real world application and industry needs, to identify the interface between academic cum technical knowledge and workplace situations, to find solutions to contemporary problematic issues and thus to be constantly aligned with professional, ethical values and principles.

lovanee_ProjectsSeven days blended learning styles with peer to peer feedback, observation and on-site training enhanced my understanding of a daily operation of a high-end resort and to understand some new aspect around Covid-19 impact on service towards visiting guests. The focus was mainly on the Front Office, Food & Beverage as well as Wellness and Spa. This has helped me to understand their approach as well as the dynamism behind their team. This underlined the fact that at all level, from operation to management, it is a team work and nothing less. My externship will definitely help to build the bridge between skills-based and knowledge-based education. Updating my knowledge and skills about current workplace practices, requirements, and tools by gaining an “on the ground” understanding of the “new normal” within the industry.
