Introduction
The Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping training (STCW Basic Safety Training course) covers the syllabus required by the STCW95 and is a mandatory training for any seafarers. As such, The STCW Basic Safety Training course is the legal minimum requirement for any person with the aspiration to work on board a commercial ship or vessels, Superyachts and Cruise ships.
The course through its different modules provides students with the knowledge and practical skills required in the event of an emergency at sea along with the necessary steps to take in order to ensure discipline and survival.
The Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) competency certificate is a compulsory requirement under the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Commonly referred as STCW 1978 as amended in 1995 and 2010, this course is internationally recognised and accepted in all countries, ports and shipping industries across the globe.
The STCW course aims to meet the mandatory requirements for seafarers to master the basic safety training and other aspects of survival techniques and instructions as prescribed under the regulations of the STCW Code. The objective is to ensure that participants in the programme grasped the essential education and training in Personal Survival Techniques meeting the requirements set out in STCW Code and have a good understanding of how to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment.
Following the successful completing of the Basic Safety Training (STCW) a student can, aspires to become an Officer on board a ship, such as an Officer of the Watch (Deck or Engine), Cadet Officer, and can proceed up to become a First Class Mariner or a Chief Engineer.
The course is a mix of theory and application, and is suitable for students who have a strong interest in the technical aspects of production and inventory management, storage of materials, packaging of products for storage and shipment and also in both internal and external distribution networks.
The duration of the course is of 93 hours including both theoretical part and practical part at sea and will be covered over one month.
The programme inclusive all theoretical practice on the campus and practical at sea including the Wet Drill are completed within one month of intensive training.
The training programme for STCW consist of five modules:
• Personal Survival Techniques
• Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
• Elementary First Aid
• Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
• Security Awareness
Security Awareness as a fifth module has been added to make you make you more knowledgeable and polyvalent on board a ship and as a Polytechnics Mauritius student be well above candidates in your aspired work.
Tools and Equipment
All the tools and equipment that you will use at Polytechnics Mauritius are brand new with the latest communications devices using the latest technology for you to have hands-on practice. In this regard, you will have the opportunity to work with emergency radio devices such as,
• Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) ,
• Search and rescue radar Transponders (SARTs) being the main means in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and
• Handheld Radio systems
Your Pool of Lecturers
The pool of professionals has judiciously been selected to provide you with the highest level of proficiency to successfully passed and obtained the STCW 78 Certification.
These professionals have very long years of experience as:
• Ship Captain,
• Marine Surveyors,
• Professional Life Saver,
• Professional Fire Fighters from the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Services (MRFS) and
• highly qualified professional in the Nursing fields.
Renewal
Under the new STCW requirements, all seafarers now need to revalidate their certificate every five years.

The course intended as basic training for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship as part as part of the ship’s complement with designated safety duties in operation of the ship.
There are no specific educational entry requirements. Depending on your personal aspiration, basic qualifications of Grade 9 and a good understanding of English Language is required to follow the STCW course All trainees must be certified by a doctor to be in good health.
However, if a student after completing the STCW, aspires to become an Officer on board a ship, such as an Officer of the Watch (OOW – Deck or Engine), then a minimum of two A Level in Science subjects is required. However, there are other entry routes based on other qualified engineering qualifications.
The awarding body is the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping.
