A healthcare assistant, also known as an HCA, plays a vital role in caring for people. An HCA provides personal care such as bathing, feeding and dressing and also performs support functions such as taking vital signs, making beds, transporting clients, assisting clients with activities of daily living. The healthcare assistant supports and directs personal care to patients and residents in a variety of institutional settings, such as hospitals, clinics and nursing homes. It is a role which requires a lot of knowledge, energy, and compassion.
The Diploma in Health Care Assistant program has been designed to train Health Care Assistants who can provide nursing aids and assist in offering patients and their families, safe holistic care which recognizes individual emotional, cultural, and socio-economic needs.

Holders of a Diploma in Health Care Assistant can apply for work opportunities in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics and nursing homes.

Students in the program will be selected from among applicants meeting the following minimum criteria:
- Individuals who have studied up “School Certificate” or “Ordinary Level” and hold at least 2 Credits in any two subjects and Passes in three subjects including English at the same sitting or at least 1 Credit in any one subject and Passes in five subjects including English or any alternative qualification
This program will be run in collaboration with the University of Mauritius which will as the Awarding Body for the Diploma.
