Public health nursing is the practice of promoting and protecting the health of populations using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health sciences.
The last two decades has witnessed a change in the pattern of diseases along with the emergence of new infectious diseases and more recently the COVID-19 pandemic are new challenges which policy makers and health professionals have to face for ensuring an efficient service to protect the health of the popula- tion. This calls for a re-engineering of our healthcare system in the context of preparedness for timely response to those challenges.
This would require health professionals working in the communi- ty (public) to be equipped with new set od skills, attitude and knowledge. The public health nurse’s role would be to prevent, promote and restore and maintain health of the population through a holistic approach which captures both preventive and curative aspects of caring. In view of this, the training program for PHN’s should be in alignment with the global standards along with its context and in this respect Polytechnic Mauritius Limited is proposing a Specialist Diploma in Public Health Nursing (DPHN).
